How to add a Skill to OpenCode

  1. Unzip the Skill so its folder sits at ~/.config/opencode/skills/<skill>/SKILL.md, or at .opencode/skills/<skill>/ in a project.
  2. Start OpenCode in your project. If it was already running and the Skill doesn’t show, restart it.
  3. Ask which Skills it has; they come from the skill tool’s list.
  4. Ask for the result and the agent loads the Skill when it matches.

Good to know

  • Permissions decide what agents see. In opencode.json, "permission": {"skill": {...}} sets allow, deny or ask by name pattern. A Skill set to deny is hidden from agents.
  • Names must be unique. OpenCode’s troubleshooting list: SKILL.md in capitals, name and description in the frontmatter, no duplicate names across folders.
  • Per-agent rules. An agent can get different Skill permissions from the global ones, in its own frontmatter or in opencode.json.

OpenCode Skills vs agents

A Skill is a set of instructions any OpenCode agent can load through the skill tool when the task matches. Agents such as plan can get their own Skill permissions, so one agent may use a Skill that another is denied.
