Codex Skills

Codex reads Skills from ~/.agents/skills/, the shared folder, not a Codex-only one. 104 ready-made Skills for video, images, web pages and slides.

How to add a Skill to Codex

  1. Unzip the Skill so its folder sits at ~/.agents/skills/<skill>/SKILL.md, or at .agents/skills/<skill>/ in a repository.
  2. Codex detects it on its own. If it doesn’t show up, restart Codex.
  3. Run /skills to see it, or type $ and start the Skill’s name.
  4. Ask for the result, or mention the Skill with
    lt;skill> in your prompt.

Good to know

  • Two Skills with one name both stay. Codex doesn’t merge Skills that share a name; both can appear in the Skill picker. Rename one if that confuses you.
  • Turn one off without deleting it. Add a [[skills.config]] entry with the Skill’s path and enabled = false to ~/.codex/config.toml, then restart Codex.
  • Symlinks work. Codex follows a symlinked Skill folder to its target, so one copy can serve several projects.

Skills vs plugins in Codex

A Skill is the workflow itself: a folder with SKILL.md. A plugin is how Skills and connectors are packaged for other people to install through the plugin directory shared by ChatGPT and Codex.

FAQ

Codex Skills: questions

Where is the Codex skills folder?

Your personal folder is ~/.agents/skills/. In a repository, Codex reads .agents/skills/ in the folder you start from, in parent folders, and at the repository root. Machine-wide Skills go in /etc/codex/skills. Source (opens in a new tab)

How do I call a Skill in Codex?

Run /skills, or type $ and the Skill’s name in your prompt. Codex can also pick a Skill on its own when your task matches its description. Source (opens in a new tab)

Codex doesn’t see the Skill I just added.

Codex detects new Skills automatically. If one doesn’t appear, restart Codex, and check that SKILL.md sits directly inside the Skill’s own folder. Source (opens in a new tab)

Do the same Skills work in ChatGPT?

OpenAI’s docs describe one Skill format for ChatGPT and Codex. In ChatGPT you type @ to pick a Skill. We sell our Skills for coding agents and have not tested them in ChatGPT. Source (opens in a new tab)
