How to add a Skill to Claude Code

Get the Skill’s ZIP from its card once downloads open, then:

  1. Unzip the Skill so its folder sits at ~/.claude/skills/<skill>/SKILL.md for every project, or at .claude/skills/<skill>/ inside one repository.
  2. Stay in your session: Claude Code watches the Skills folders and adds the new one without a restart.
  3. Run /skills to see it in the list.
  4. Ask for the result in your own words, or type /<skill> to run it directly.

Good to know

  • Cloud sessions and Cowork don’t see your folder. They don’t read ~/.claude/skills/ on your machine. Commit the Skill to the repository’s .claude/skills/, or enable it on your claude.ai account.
  • Personal beats project. If the same Skill name is in ~/.claude/skills/ and the project’s .claude/skills/, the personal copy runs.
  • Don’t name a folder “synced”. Claude Code keeps Skills downloaded from claude.ai in ~/.claude/skills/synced/ and skips a Skill you author under that name.

Skills vs CLAUDE.md

CLAUDE.md loads in every session. A Skill’s body loads only when it is used, so a long procedure costs almost nothing until you need it. Claude Code’s docs suggest turning a CLAUDE.md section into a Skill once it has grown into a procedure.

Where is the Claude Code skills folder?

Personal Skills go in ~/.claude/skills/<skill>/ and work in every project on your machine. Project Skills go in .claude/skills/<skill>/ inside the repository; commit that folder so your team gets them too. Source (opens in a new tab)

Do I have to restart Claude Code after adding a Skill?

No. Claude Code watches ~/.claude/skills/ and the project’s .claude/skills/ and picks up added, edited or removed Skills within the current session. Bare mode is the exception. Source (opens in a new tab)

Why can’t a cloud session find my Skill?

Cloud sessions, cloud scheduled tasks and Cowork don’t read ~/.claude/skills/ on your machine. Commit the Skill to the repository’s .claude/skills/ for cloud sessions, or enable it for your claude.ai account. Source (opens in a new tab)

How do I run one Skill on purpose?

Type a slash and the Skill’s name, for example /summarize-changes. The folder name, or the name in its frontmatter, becomes the command. Source (opens in a new tab)
