How to add a Skill to OpenClaw

  1. Unzip the Skill so its folder sits at ~/.openclaw/skills/<skill>/SKILL.md for every local agent, or at skills/<skill>/ in one agent’s workspace.
  2. Stay in your session: OpenClaw watches its Skills folders and picks up the change on the next turn.
  3. If it doesn’t show up, run openclaw skills check.
  4. Ask for the result, or type $ in the Control UI composer and pick the Skill.

Good to know

  • Workspace beats shared. If the same name is in several places, the workspace’s skills/ wins, then its .agents/skills/, then ~/.agents/skills/, then ~/.openclaw/skills/, then bundled Skills.
  • Allowlists can hide a Skill. agents.defaults.skills and agents.entries.*.skills limit which Skills an agent sees, wherever they are installed. An empty list means no Skills for that agent.
  • ~/.agents/skills/ needs the default state. If OPENCLAW_STATE_DIR points somewhere other than ~/.openclaw, OpenClaw leaves ~/.agents/skills/ out. Workspace and managed Skills still load.

OpenClaw Skills vs Skill Workshop

Skills you install are folders you put in a Skills directory. Workshop Skills are ones an agent saves and updates on its own; they stay with that agent, and every change keeps the previous version so it can be undone.

FAQ

OpenClaw Skills: questions

Where does OpenClaw look for Skills?

Highest first: the workspace’s skills/, its .agents/skills/, ~/.agents/skills/, the shared ~/.openclaw/skills/, Workshop Skills, bundled Skills, then extra folders and plugin Skills. When two share a name, the higher one wins. Source (opens in a new tab)

Do I need to restart OpenClaw after adding a Skill?

No. With skills.load.watch on (the default), adding a Skill triggers a rescan, and existing sessions pick up changed file-backed Skills on their next turn. A safety rescan also runs every 30 minutes. Source (opens in a new tab)

A Skill doesn’t show up for my agent.

Run openclaw skills check. A Skill can be found but not ready, because a required binary, environment variable or config is missing, or hidden by the agent’s allowlist. Source (opens in a new tab)

How do I call a Skill on purpose?

Type $ in the Control UI composer and pick it, or write $skill-name in your message; one message can reference up to eight Skills. On channel messages, /skill-name works as a standalone command. Source (opens in a new tab)
