How to add a Skill to Gemini CLI

  1. Unzip the Skill so its folder sits at ~/.agents/skills/<skill>/SKILL.md, or at .agents/skills/<skill>/ in a workspace.
  2. In a running session, run /skills reload.
  3. Run /skills list to see it.
  4. Ask for the result. When Gemini wants the Skill it shows a consent prompt with the folder it will read; approve it.

Good to know

  • Workspace beats user beats extension. If the same name is in several places, the workspace Skill wins, then your user Skill, then one bundled in an extension.
  • It can install from a folder too. gemini skills install takes a Git repository or a local directory; add --scope workspace to keep it in one project.
  • Turn one off for now. /skills disable <name> keeps the folder but stops Gemini using it; /skills enable <name> brings it back.

Gemini CLI Skills vs extensions

Extensions can bundle Skills of their own; Gemini CLI ranks those below your user and workspace Skills. A Skill on its own is one folder with SKILL.md, and only its name and description sit in context until Gemini activates it.

FAQ

Gemini CLI Skills: questions

Where does Gemini CLI look for Skills?

User Skills in ~/.gemini/skills/ or ~/.agents/skills/, workspace Skills in .gemini/skills/ or .agents/skills/, and Skills bundled in extensions. Source (opens in a new tab)

Why does Gemini ask before using a Skill?

Activating a Skill adds its folder to the paths Gemini may read, so it shows the Skill’s name, purpose and folder and waits for your approval. Source (opens in a new tab)

I added a Skill and Gemini doesn’t list it.

Run /skills reload, then /skills list. If two Skills share a name, the higher tier wins: workspace over user over extension. Source (opens in a new tab)

Can I install a Skill without copying files by hand?

Yes: gemini skills install <repo or folder>, with --scope user (the default) or workspace, and --path for a Skill inside a sub-folder of a repository. Source (opens in a new tab)
