Fable 5.5: release date rumors, the evidence, and what Anthropic has actually said

Is Claude Fable 5.5 out? No. Every leak so far—who said it, when, how many people saw it, and whether it came true—plus what would count as a real announcement. One email when it ships.

The short answer

Not released. As of October 9, 2026, Anthropic has not announced a Fable 5.5; the newest Fable is still 5.1. The leaked “Tuesday, October 6” date passed—Haiku 5.5 shipped on October 7 instead. Treat every date on this page as a rumor.

Release alert / one email

Hear once, when it is real.

We check Anthropic’s newsroom, model directory and API notes every day. When Fable 5.5 is officially announced, you get one email with the price, which plans include it and where to use it. Nothing for rumors.

One email, then nothing unless you also ask for the free Brief. How we handle your data.

What is officially true today

Anthropic’s model directory lists four current models: Fable 5.1 (September 1), Opus 5.5 (September 22), Sonnet 5.5 (September 28) and Haiku 5.5 (October 7). Haiku 5.5 was the last model Anthropic had pre-announced; nothing else is pre-announced. The API release notes run through October 8 and mention no new Fable; the newsroom has no Fable post after September 1.

The rumor ledger, in order

September 10: @Mr_Salio says a fresh Fable pretraining run could arrive in late September or early October (compiled by Kingy; we have not read that post ourselves). September 18: @chetaslua posts “Fable 5.2 is tested in Claude Code”; @notjazii reports similar routing. September 21: TestingCatalog reports stealth tests of Fable 5.2 together with Opus 5.5—the Opus part came true the next day. October 1: @chetaslua posts “Fable 5.5 is auto routing on web,” with a screenshot captioned “label says 5.1, knows the reset guy” (about 652,000 views when we read it). October 1: @imjustnewatai says it is “expected to release next week … I’m hearing of a Tuesday release,” which would be October 6 (about 307,000 views). October 2: @kimmonismus (Chubby) repeats that and adds “I can’t verify any of this.” October 5: @LuminaBench says Claude Code now saves a rolling Fable choice instead of pinning a version, and reads that as grey-scale testing. October 6: no announcement. October 7: Anthropic releases Haiku 5.5.

Who has been right so far

TestingCatalog: right on Opus 5.5 (predicted the Tuesday; it shipped September 22), unresolved on Fable. @chetaslua: two routing reports, neither resolved—routing shows a different answer came back, not a name, date or price. @imjustnewatai and the accounts that repeated it: wrong on October 6. @LuminaBench’s observation has a mundane explanation: Claude Code’s own documentation says its model aliases “update over time” and that the fable alias resolves to Fable 5.1 unless you pin a version—so a rolling alias is documented behaviour, not evidence of a new model. Prediction-market odds and “it feels smarter” posts are not evidence either.

5.2 or 5.5?

The same rumored model has carried both names. “5.2” circulated first, in September; since October 1 the leakers say “5.5,” which would match the Opus, Sonnet and Haiku 5.5 numbering. Anthropic has confirmed neither name. Our read: if it ships this autumn it will probably be called Fable 5.5—but that is a guess about a name, not a fact about a release.

What would count as confirmation

An Anthropic newsroom post, a model ID (for example claude-fable-5-5) in the API documentation, a price on the pricing page, or a system card. Screenshots, routing tests and prediction markets are not confirmation. When one of those appears, this page changes to a release page: price, plans, where to use it, and what changed from 5.1.

What to do while you wait

Do not buy usage credits in advance for a model that does not exist yet. Max plans and premium Team/Enterprise seats include Fable 5 and 5.1 up to 50% of weekly usage limits; Pro and Team Standard seats use them with usage credits. If you need the strongest Claude model today, use Fable 5.1 where it clearly beats Opus 5.5 on your task—and Opus 5.5 everywhere else, because Pro includes it.

Questions readers ask

When is Fable 5.5 coming out?

There is no official date. The leaked “Tuesday, October 6” date passed without a release. Some accounts now say November; Anthropic has said nothing.

Is Claude already serving Fable 5.5 under the Fable 5.1 label?

Unverifiable from the outside. Several people report different-feeling answers under the 5.1 label; nobody can show a model ID. A model picker that says 5.1 is the only official statement of what you are using.

Will Fable 5.5 be on the $20 Pro plan?

Unknown. Fable 5 and 5.1 are not included in Pro—Pro uses them with separately billed usage credits—and Fable 5.1 was never part of a promotion. Assume the same until Anthropic says otherwise.

Will Fable 5.5 be free?

Unknown, and nothing suggests it. Claude Free has never included a Fable model; the free Fable 5 promotion ended on July 19, 2026.

Is Fable 5.5 the same as Fable 5.2?

Almost certainly the same rumored model under two names. Anthropic has confirmed neither.
