Claude Fable 5 is back — live worldwide from July 1
After an 18-day, US-ordered shutdown, Claude Fable 5 is available again. The government lifted its export controls on June 30, and Anthropic restored Fable 5 globally on July 1 — with one catch, and a new model alongside it.
Quick summary
- The US lifted export controls on Fable 5 and Mythos 5 on June 30; Fable 5 returned worldwide on July 1.
- It's live on the Claude platform, Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Cowork; cloud (Bedrock, Vertex, Foundry) is being re-enabled in stages.
- The catch: on Pro, Max, Team and select Enterprise, Fable 5 counts for up to 50% of your weekly limit until July 7, then usage credits.
- Mythos 5 is back only for vetted US organizations. Anthropic also launched Claude Sonnet 5, a cheaper agentic model.
What happened
On June 12, the US government applied export controls to Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 after Amazon researchers reported a jailbreak that got Fable 5 to identify software vulnerabilities and, in one case, produce exploit code. Because Anthropic couldn't restrict access by nationality in real time, it suspended both models for everyone. Eighteen days later, on June 30, the government lifted the controls, and Anthropic began redeploying Fable 5 worldwide on July 1.
How to access it
Fable 5 is back on the Claude platform, Claude.ai, Claude Code, and Claude Cowork for Pro, Max, Team, and eligible Enterprise plans. Anthropic says it is re-enabling access on AWS Bedrock, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Foundry as quickly as possible. There is no separate 'free Fable 5' — it's part of your paid Claude plan.
The catch: a 50% cap until July 7
Through July 7, Fable 5 counts for up to 50% of your weekly usage limit on Pro, Max, Team, and select Enterprise plans; after that, extra usage runs on Anthropic's usage credits. Practically, Fable 5 is usable today, but heavy users may hit the cap faster than before the shutdown.
Mythos 5 is still US-only
Mythos 5 — the less-restricted sibling that shares Fable 5's underlying model — is back only for a set of vetted US organizations that defend critical infrastructure, following a separate government approval on June 26. It is not available to the general public.
Anthropic also shipped Sonnet 5
Alongside the restoration, Anthropic launched Claude Sonnet 5, positioned as a cheaper way to run agents. It's the default model for Free and Pro, priced at $2 / $10 per million tokens (in / out) through August 31, and closes much of the agentic-coding gap to Opus 4.8 at roughly 40–60% less cost. For cost-sensitive work, it's worth weighing next to the open-weight GLM-5.2.
Do you still need an alternative?
If you switched to GLM-5.2, Opus 4.8, or another model during the outage, you don't have to switch back. GLM-5.2 is open-weight and still far cheaper than Fable 5, and Sonnet 5 is a cheaper agentic option in the Claude family. The right choice is task-based: compare on your actual work, not the brand.
Need the short answer?
Fable 5 is back worldwide as of July 1 — but capped at 50% of your weekly limit until July 7. See the live status, or use GLM-5.2 or the new Sonnet 5 for cheaper work.
