The Seikilos epitaph, in one HTML file

About the post

An animation built around the Seikilos epitaph, the oldest known complete song. The author says the model picked the topic, and that the art and music sit in one 200 KB HTML file.

Our summary. The author’s own words are in the post above; we do not copy them.

Our note

An inscribed stone column is followed from carving to museum case. It opens at night in Tralles, "in Roman Asia Minor"; then a floating stylus cuts Greek letters, with smaller musical signs above them. Dated cards move the stone on: "AD 1250", when it goes under, "AD 1883", when railway builders dig it up, a spell holding a flowerpot in a courtyard, "AD 1922" on a map line from Smyrna to Istanbul, and 1966 in Denmark. The song's Greek words return in gold with English captions, and one caption has the narrator say it is made of written things. No prompt was shared; the single-file account is the author's.
