Max upgrade or the $100 credit — which side of the split are you on?

From July 20, Fable 5 stays included on Max and Team Premium (up to 50% of weekly limits), while Pro runs it on usage credits — with a one-time $100 credit. Two questions, honest math, a verdict:

8 hrs/week
1casualdailyheavy40

Assumes ≈0.6M input + 0.15M output tokens per focused hour at the published $10 / $50 per-million credit rate — about $13.50/hour. Interactive chat runs lighter; heavy agentic runs heavier. Plan-included use is capped at 50% of your weekly limit on Max, so extreme agentic load can exceed even Max caps. Estimates, not quotes.

New since July 24 · the third option

Opus 5 may make this whole question moot. It ships at $5/$25 — half Fable 5's rate — is included on Pro (no credits needed), and Anthropic claims nearly all of Fable 5's intelligence. If your work doesn't provably need the flagship, the cheapest correct answer since July 24 is often: stay on Pro and use Opus 5. The honest comparison →

Why this keeps changing

Anthropic has moved Fable 5's terms three times in July alone. The Field Guide re-runs this math every week — which jobs still deserve Fable 5, what belongs on Sonnet, GLM or Kimi, and what it all costs. Read a full free issue and judge it, or see pricing — $12/mo, cancel anytime.
